Julio Velázquez is very likely to be Fortuna Sittard’s new trainer. The Limburger reports that the club is close to an agreement with the forty-year-old Spaniard. Fortuna resigned two and a half weeks ago Sjors Ultee, after which the interim duo Dominik Vergoossen and Jeroen Schepens temporarily took over the honors in the following games.

Vergoossen and Schepens will probably still be on the bench against NEC next Saturday. There is a good chance that Velázquez will be in charge the next game, at home against Excelsior. The trainer is currently clubless, after he was unable to avoid relegation with Deportivo Alavés last season and left that club. Velázquez started as a trainer at a young age, which means that he already has a large list of clubs to his name.

The first serious job of his career was Villarreal in 2012, which at the time played in the Segunda División. In the same competition he also had Real Murcia, Real Betis and Alcorcón under his wing. He also worked in Italy and Portugal. He was the trainer of Udinese, Belenenses, Vitória Setúbal and Marítimo. It is striking that Velázquez only lasted more than a year at Alcorcón of the above clubs.

After Ultee’s dismissal, technical manager Sjoerd Ars preferred a Dutch trainer, while owner Isitan Gün preferred a foreign trainer. Gün therefore seems to be getting his way with the arrival of Velázquez. The Spaniard faces a difficult task in Sittard, as Fortuna is the last in the Eredivisie with zero points from five matches.
