Brian Brobbey has had difficulty finishing chances this season, as former top striker Roy Makaay also noted in conversation with the NOS. However, the veteran of Bayern Munich and Feyenoord, among others, has an encouraging message for the Ajax striker, as he believes that finishing can still be learned. Makaay thinks that Brobbey mainly needs to find more balance while completing his opportunities.

Makaay, who scored 313 goals for five different clubs in his career, knows better than anyone how to finish chances. “You always have to be in the right place, remain calm in front of the goal and stay balanced.”

According to Wijchenaar it is very simple. “Being in the right place, you either have that or you don’t. The rest can all be trained,” says Makaay, who states that Brobbey has what it takes to be in the right place. The physically strong striker had several chances against PSV (5-2 defeat), but he only scored one goal.

Problem
In conversation with the public broadcaster, Makaay examines Brobbey’s biggest problem. “He is very strong and very fast, but he is too often off balance. You often see him fall after a shot. And then it is difficult to get the ball in the right direction.”

“How does that happen?” Makaay continues. “It’s difficult to judge from a distance, but maybe he’s too wild and too hasty. It seems that basically it should have been better. Staying balanced while finishing can be trained.” Yet Brobbey doesn’t have to worry, according to Makaay. “You can learn to finish.”

What can be said for Brobbey is that he has started the season apparently fit. The 21-year-old from Amsterdam has already played 1,059 minutes for Ajax, spread over 13 matches this season. Brobbey only managed to find the net four times. The total score for Ajax is 31 goals from 89 matches. He acted as declarant seven times.

Brobbey will again get the chance to find the goal on behalf of Ajax on Thursday evening. FC Volendam will visit the Johan Cruijff ArenA at 8:00 PM. The Amsterdam team can make good use of the points, as John van ‘t Schip’s team starts the catch-up game at the bottom. However, with a win, Ajax can immediately climb to fifteenth place. In that case, Volendam and FC Utrecht will be passed over.
