Through an official press release on its own website, FIFA has announced that the No Discrimination campaign will be used immediately at the World Cup in Qatar. Normally, captains would not wear a special captain’s armband until the quarter finals. The world football association announced on Tuesday morning that wearing the OneLove captain’s armband will result in the captains being shown a yellow card.

Bringing the anti-discrimination campaign to the forefront seems to be a direct answer to the consternation that has arisen after the One Love captaincy. In the official statement, FIFA says that bringing forward the campaign “gives all 32 captains the opportunity to wear this armband during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022”. “This is in accordance with Article 13.8.1 of the FIFA Equipment Rules, which states that in FIFA tournaments, the captain’s armbands of the World Football Association must be worn.”

Captains from the Netherlands, England, Wales, Germany, Denmark, Belgium and Switzerland wanted to wear the One Love captain’s armband to make a statement. Last Sunday late the Telegraph already know that FIFA wanted to punish wearing the belt with a yellow card. The English newspaper reported that the world football association had informed the English football association FA. Official approval must be given for wearing a different captain’s armband and that had not happened.

FIFA previously announced that alternative captain bands with texts such as #SaveThePlanet and #NoDiscrimination will be tolerated. In the statement, the association also says that it is an inclusive organization ‘that wants to put football at the service of society by supporting good and legitimate causes’. “But this must be done within the framework of the competition rules known to everyone”, this is how a bracelet was changed.

The press release also states that FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously expressed his support for the LGBTQI+ community. “I have spoken to the senior leadership of Qatar on this subject. They have confirmed, and I can reaffirm that, that everyone is welcome here. If anyone says the opposite, that is not the opinion of the country and certainly not the opinion of FIFA.”
