Cole Bassett leaves Feyenoord after more than six months. The Rotterdam club reports on Saturday that the 21-year-old midfielder from the United States will finish the season on a rental basis at Fortuna Sittard. Bassett made the switch from Major League Soccer club Colorado Rapids to Feyenoord in January as a mercenary, but in recent months he has not been able to secure a permanent place in midfield in De Kuip.

Bassett made seven appearances in the Feyenoord shirt in the second half of last season. At the season opening against Vitesse (2-5 victory), trainer Arne Slot used him as a substitute. The future of the young American therefore lies in Sittard for the time being. “I am happy to play in the Eredivisie next season,” Bassett told Fortuna’s website. “It is a wonderful opportunity to make minutes in the yellow-green of Fortuna Sittard next season. I look forward to being able to contribute to the sporting performance of this club with goals.”

Technical director Sjoerd Ars is happy with the arrival of Bassett, the intended successor of Zian Flemming who left for Millwall. “We have long looked for a worthy successor for Zian Flemming, we have now found it with Cole. They are comparable types, they both have running and scoring ability. In addition, he is a top professional, a great player to play with. to work and to have on the team.” Fortuna also reports that the procedure for a new work permit has now been started.

Feyenoord initially rented Bassett for a year and a half from Colorado Rapids, with an option to buy. The American club reports that this purchase option is still in force, so that the Rotterdam team can still definitively bring in the midfielder next year. The acquisition of Fortuna came on behalf of Colorado Rapids to thirteen goals and eleven assists in 72 games.
