Lutsharel Geertruida will stay with Feyenoord. The right-footed defender has reached an oral agreement with his current employer about a contract until mid-2024, the Rotterdammers confirm on Monday through official channels. Geertruida’s current contract expired next year. “It’s great that we have come out of it,” said technical director Frank Arnesen.

Feyenoord had been hoping to extend with the defender for some time. Earlier, a deal fell through due to strong demands from Geertruida, but new talks have led to a new three-year agreement. Arnesen says on the club website that Feyenoord would like to bind promising young players for a long time. “We had already succeeded with players like Orkun Kökcü and Luis Sinisterra, and recently also with Tyrell Malacia and Justin Bijlow. The fact that we can add Lutsharel to that list is a very positive thing. He has progressed by leaps and bounds in recent years. and we are confident that once he is fully fit, he will continue that development.”

“As a boy who grew up here in South Rotterdam, there is nothing more beautiful than the prospect that I will continue to wear the Feyenoord shirt in the coming years and that I can develop further here at the club,” Geertruida said in a comment. “My approach from the very beginning has been to stay with this wonderful club. That is why I am so happy that the club and I can confirm today that there is an oral agreement. My recovery is going in the right direction. I feel that I have become stronger and can’t wait to get back there as soon as possible and play in the beautiful full Kuip.”

Geertruida is currently recovering from a knee injury. Previously reported RTV Rijnmond that the 21-year-old defender is expected back at Feyenoord in September. The youth international made his debut in the first team in 2017. He had his big breakthrough in the 2020/21 season. He finished the season with eight goals and two assists in all competitions.
