Feyenoord did not manage to keep three points from the away match against FC Groningen on Wednesday evening. The number four of the Eredivisie, visiting the number six, had a predominance in possession and chances, especially in the second half, but nevertheless was unable to score: 0-0. Feyenoord did hit the aluminum three times. After the make-up game, which would actually be finished on Sunday, February 7, Feyenoord is one point ahead of Vitesse and three points less than AZ.

Dick Advocaat made two changes in his line-up after Sunday’s 2-2 draw against FC Twente. Uros Spajic and Mark Diemers were on the bench, so Eric Botteghin and Leroy Fer entered the starting eleven. In the first ten minutes, Feyenoord looked for the attack, which resulted in shots from Steven Berghuis and Bryan Linssen. Those goal attempts did not pose much danger, but after eighteen minutes a threatening situation arose for Groningen. After a corner from Feyenoord, Orkun Kökçü shot on goal from the second line; after the rescue of Sergio Padt, Leroy Fer headed over from close range in the rebound. Shortly thereafter, a new chance arose for Feyenoord and Luis Sinisterra shot in a chaotic situation at close range against the post.

However, Groningen did not remain unaffected in the meantime. After ten minutes, Tomás Suslov ran into Nick Marsman from a promising position and a few minutes later, the steamy left back Gabriel Gudmundsson suffered the same when he tried in the short corner after preparatory work by Alessio Da Cruz. Five minutes before half time, Groningen was again close to the opening goal. With a razor-sharp cross from the right flank, Suslov enabled teammate Jörgen Strand Larsen to head from the penalty area, but again Marsman paid close attention. Because a shot by Kökçü shortly afterwards was parried by Padt again, the first half was devoid of goals.

Twelve minutes after the break, Linssen almost hurt his old club when he got the ball in front of him in the penalty area at the hands of Toornstra, extended the leather with the tip of the shoe and eventually hit the top of the crossbar. Of the two clubs, Feyenoord was most emphatically looking for a goal. Groningen got away well when Sinisterra pulled in from the left flank just outside the penalty area and fired on the inside of the post from a bet towards the far corner. It was the third and last time that Feyenoord hit the aluminum. A victory was no longer possible for the visitors, while a point for Groningen was the highest possible.
