It seems that Manchester United will be stirring the transfer market next summer in the hunt for a new midfielder. Both Youri Tielemans and Rúben Neves are mentioned, but if it is up to Rio Ferdinand, United are looking higher. The former professional footballer does not believe that either player is the solution to United’s midfield problems, he says in the podcast Vibe With FIVE

United are expected to prioritize signing a new midfielder next summer. Paul Pogba threatens to leave the club with his contract expiring, while questions are being raised whether Fred and Scott McTominay are good enough to make a serious bid for the league title. Neves and Tielemans have been in excellent form in recent weeks for Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City respectively. Both midfielders faced each other on Sunday, when Neves was accurate with a volley. It has been said for some time that Tielemans is ready for the next step.

“I think he’s a nice player, he’s fantastic,” Ferdinand begins promisingly about Tielemans. “But a midfield with Bruno Fernandes, Tielemans and Neves would not be my choice, quite frankly. They are both good players, but if you want your midfield to compete with the rest of the top club I would argue against their arrival. We would really lack mobility.” Neves came over from FC Porto in 2017 for an amount of eighteen million euros. In his first year under Nuno Espírito Santo he immediately obtained his doctorate with the Wolves to the Premier League.

Neves was linked with both Arsenal and United during the winter transfer window, but saw his employer put a £48million price tag on him. Tielemans is also on United’s radar. The midfielder has a contract until next summer. The 24-year-old Belgian is one of the absolute trendsetters at Leicester, which took him over from AS Monaco in 2019. He has scored six goals and two assists in 17 appearances in the Premier League this season. As in the case of Neves, United could also face competition from Arsenal at Tielemans.
