Fenerbahçe was painfully kicked out of the cup tournament by Kayserispor on Tuesday evening. The team of trainer Ismail Kartal played the entire second half with one man more, but had to concede the only goal of the match in the absolute final phase: 0-1. The visitors were one man less in the first half due to a red card for Ugur Demirok, who went too hard on the ankle of Ozan Tufan on the edge of the penalty area.

At Fenerbahçe there was a starting place for Ferdi Kadioglu, while at the visitors Bilal Bayazit appeared at the kick-off. The Dutch goalkeeper made the switch from Vitesse to Kayserispor last summer. Fener is having a disappointing season and has focused on the cup this season. Kartal’s team got off to a good start and created the first danger after ten minutes of play, when Tufan fired on the enemy goal on the pass of Kadioglu. The midfielder proved inaccurate in finishing. Bright Osayi-Samuel also failed to promote his effort to a goal.

On the stroke of half-time, Fener was helped by the visitors, when Demirok intervened much too hard on the edge of the penalty area and hit Tufan’s ankle hard. Referee Arda Kardesler immediately drew red after the intervention of the video referee. The home team took advantage of the surplus situation and took the game to itself after the break. A pass from Diego Rossi could not be headed in by Mergim Berisha and Mert Hakan Yandas hit the post with a shot.

When the game seemed to be heading for an extension, Kayserispor still took the lead via Ramazan Civelek. The defender was allowed to score a free kick of more than twenty meters and saw his bet changed direction. Goalkeeper Berke Özer had no chance at all and saw the ball end up in the net next to him. Due to the early elimination, only the Conference League remains for Fenerbahçe. The diptych with Slavia Prague awaits on 17 and 24 February.
