Frank Wormuth will be the new head coach of FC Groningen as of next season, the club confirms via the official channels. The 61-year-old German signs a three-year contract in the Euroborg, until mid-2025. The Berlin-born trainer is still head coach of Heracles Almelo, which wanted to extend his expiring contract. Wormuth, however, refrained from doing so, because he wanted to embark on a new adventure.

Technical director of FC Groningen Mark-Jan Fledderus also appointed Wormuth as trainer of Heracles in 2018. At the time, Fledderus was working as a technical manager in Almelo. “It is no secret that I find Frank an interesting trainer,” Fledderus responds to Wormuth’s definitive appointment. “It is not for nothing that I appointed him at Heracles four years ago. can work together.”
Wormuth himself indicates in a first reaction that he is ‘of course happy’, but that he does not yet want to discuss his new job in detail. The German does not want to get in the way of current Groningen trainer Danny Buijs and end his period at Heracles well.

The rumors that Wormuth would become the new trainer of Groningen had been going on for a while. At the end of December, reporter Sjors Blaauw confronted van ESPN him with the fact that he had had a conversation with Groningen. “I understand that you had an interview with FC Groningen, how was that?” said Blaauw. “I haven’t had a conversation with Groningen, hello,” Wormuth replied. “In Germany we call that a fangfrage (loaded question, ed.). Do you want to talk to me seriously, please. This is not a theme now. This is the first time I hear that Danny Buijs is leaving Groningen. I am a trainer of Heracles and be here under contract. Don’t do that.”

Wormuth is in his fourth season in Almelo and has a contract until next summer. Last March, the contract was extended for a year. The German finished seventh, eighth and ninth in the Eredivisie with the Heraclieden in succession. This season is going to be a bit more difficult. Heracles collected only twenty points from as many matches and occupies thirteenth place. The German previously worked for, among others, Fenerbahçe (as an assistant), Union Berlin, VfR Aalen and the German Football Association (responsible for trainer training).
