Newcastle United are in talks with several candidates to succeed Steve Bruce as coach at St. James’ Park, transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano reports. The Italian journalist puts forward a candidate with the clubless Paulo Fonseca. He is open for the position after he missed a job as head coach of Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

Fonseca was close to an agreement with Tottenham last summer. In the final phase, a deal still fell through and the Premier League club chose Nuno Espírito Santo. The Portuguese may now be working in Newcastle, although there are more privateers on the coast. According to Romano, the club management is in talks with ‘many candidates’ and nothing has been decided yet. It is said that a decision could take days.

Last week, after the completion of the takeover by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, there was already explicit speculation about the departure of Steve Bruce, in order to make room for a big name. Antonio Conte, among others, was named as a candidate. Bruce was still allowed to stay on for the duel – the thousandth in his coaching career – with Tottenham Hotspur, but had to pack his bags after the 2-3 defeat.

In addition to the names of Conte and Fonseca, the names of Lucien Favre, Frank Lampard (clubless), Wayne Rooney (Derby County), Steven Gerrard (Rangers) and Brendan Rodgers (Leicester City) have also been mentioned in recent days. According to The Athletic Bruce will receive a severance payment of 9.5 million euros.
