Pierre-Emile Højbjerg will not be allowed to leave Tottenham Hotspur on loan next winter, reports Fabrizio Romano. The 28-year-old midfielder was linked with a (temporary) transfer to Ajax and Juventus, but will remain in North London.

Tottenham already turned down an offer from Atlético Madrid on Deadline Day last summer, which Højbjerg hoped to take over on loan at the time. According to Romano, the position of the Spurs not changed several months later.

The Danish midfielder was already in the picture at Ajax in 2020, but then opted for a transfer to Tottenham. Under manager Ange Postecoglou, Højbjerg had to settle for a reserve role at the beginning of this season, but due to a wave of injuries, he has been getting more and more playing time in recent weeks.

Football International and The Telegraph We previously assumed that Tottenham’s controller would be too expensive for Ajax, although Mike Verweij, on behalf of the morning newspaper, did not yet rule out that Højbjerg might still be feasible through a rental structure.

Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip announced in the run-up to the home game against Vitesse (5-0) last Saturday that the club hopes to at least add routine to the selection in the coming transfer window. According to VI-journalist Tim van Duijn, Ajax is looking for a typical Azor Matusiwa: a player with experience who sets the tone in midfield and provides the necessary balance.

“Ajax inquired about Azor Matusiwa (25) himself last summer, but that never became concrete. The question is whether he is feasible now, if the player is already interested in a winter transfer. His contract runs until 2027 at Stade Reims. Ajax is identifying several options,” Van Duijn recently wrote.

Ajax seems to want to deal with the departure of Edson Álvarez better. The purchases Benjamin Tahirovic, Sivert Mannsverk and Branco van den Boomen were given the opportunity. However, the former ended up on the bench, while Mannsverk and Van den Boomen are currently recovering from injuries.
