Peterborough United striker Jonson Clarke-Harris has been banned for four games by the English Football Association, has been fined £5,300, and is required to attend a course. The reason for this punishment are posts on social media from eight and nine years old. Clarke-Harris was eighteen years old at the time.

In August, it was revealed that the 27-year-old Peterborough United attacker had been charged by the FA over six alleged offenses related to social media comments. It concerned tweets on October 27, 2012 and March 6, 2013. It is unknown what Clarke-Harris posted at the time, but according to the FA it was in violation of rules regarding sexual orientation.

“The comments were offensive, inappropriate and in violation of FA Rule E3.1,” an FA spokesperson said. The penalty means that Clarke-Harris, who scored 31 goals in League One last season, will miss Championship games against Coventry City, Bournemouth, Bristol City and Middlesbrough. The suspension is a hard blow for Peterborough. Clarke-Harris has scored two goals for the league’s number 21 so far this season.

Club owner Darragh MacAnthony has not yet commented on the suspension. After it became known in August that Clarke-Harris was facing a penalty, he quickly made himself heard. “Just after we got our PhD, someone has been reading hours of tweets from someone who was eighteen years old at the time, trying to find things and report them. What kind of world do we live in today?” Peterborough United have not yet commented on the suspension.
