Burnley has won the all-important Premier League relegation game against Everton. Once the Clarets had struck first at their own Turf Moor via a corner, Everton came back into the game via two penalty kicks from Richarlison. In the second half, however, Burnley won the game through goals from Jay Rodriguez and Maxwel Cornet. The victory puts Burnley on 24 points from 29 games, just one point less than number seventeen Everton.

Everton knew what to do as they seriously fear relegation to the Championship in the event of a defeat. The team of manager Frank Lampard still has a very tough program in the Premier League with opponents such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal and must seriously fear the first relegation from the highest level in England since 1951. Beek will not participate, he is still recovering from a thigh injury. Anwar El Ghazi started on the reserve bench. At Burnley there was a starting spot for Wout Weghorst. The striker has not been very successful since his arrival from VfL Wolfsburg and only managed to score once.

Burnley started the game well. The home team often sought the attack and saw that attitude quickly rewarded. After twelve minutes, Cornet skilfully curled towards the far post, where the attentive Nathan Collins shot the ball in the wrong direction. Three minutes later, however, Burnley cut himself ugly. Youngster Anthony Gordon made a good run in the penalty area before being put down by Ashley Westwood. Referee Mike Dean did not hesitate and pointed firmly to the spot. Richarlison took the opportunity and made no mistake. Five minutes before half time Everton were awarded another penalty. Again it was Richarlison who went behind the ball: 1-2.

It was the first time in Premier League history that an away team was able to use two penalty kicks in the first half. Ten minutes after the break, Burnley tied the score. After excellent preparatory work by Charlie Taylor, Rodriguez only had to run into the ball. The comeback was complete when Sean Dyche’s team grabbed the full loot in the final phase. Ben Godfrey handled the ball sloppy, after which Matej, who came in for Weghorst, picked up Vydra and gave the ball to Cornet, who did not hesitate and left Jordan Pickford without a chance for the third time: 3-2.
