Christian Eriksen was indeed hit by a cardiac arrest on Saturday, national doctor Morten Boesen announced on Sunday afternoon during a specially scheduled press conference. National coach Kasper Hjulmand says he regrets that he has finished the game with his team.

“We got it back with the help of a defibrillator,” says Boesen. “We were just in time, otherwise he would have died. Today I spoke to him a few times. “He is still stable and he is doing okay given the circumstances.” Eriksen collapsed shortly before the end of the first half on Saturday The midfielder was resuscitated on the pitch for about ten minutes. According to the Danish federation, Eriksen, who is in a hospital in Copenhagen, is still in stable condition. Victim support is available for the players and staff of Denmark.

Besides Boesen, Hjulmand and federation chairman Peter Möller were also present at the press conference. “Christian has also been in contact with the other players today,” Boesen continues. “He has to stay in the hospital for examination and observation. The first examinations give a positive picture.” Hjulmand also spoke with Eriksen. “He indicated that he didn’t know much about it anymore and immediately asked: ‘How are you?’ That’s typical Christian. He’s a great player and a great person. He wants us to play. And we want to play for Christian.”

Thanks to the quick action of the emergency services and captain Simon Kjaer, Eriksen is doing well under the circumstances. “We have received great help on the field and in the hospital”, Boesen expresses his thanks. “The players also assisted us well by forming a circle around him, so that we could do our work quietly.” The doctor also explained that psychologists are present at the hotel of the Danish national team for the trauma processing of the players. “They are there today too,” said the federal doctor.

Hjulmand said during the press conference that he regrets that his team finished the game on Saturday night. “We should not have continued,” said Hjulmand. “We should have just got on the bus, then we would have seen further today. It was wrong to put the responsibility on the players. I now have a bad feeling about it. We agreed that we would only make the decision until we had clarity on how Eriksen was doing, then we were notified that he was conscious and talking again.”
