Erik ten Hag has tackled the selection of Manchester United after the unprecedented washing against arch-rival Liverpool (7-0). The selection of the Red Devils was already punished by the manager at Anfield and had to be on the training field at 09:00 sharp on Monday morning. Ten Hag is said to have spoken to them angrily afterwards.

According to DailyMirror Ten Hag forced his players in the Anfield dressing room to listen in dead silence to the Liverpool players celebrating victory after the historic game. The manager told his players to ‘use it as motivation to avoid another defeat like this’. In addition, Ten Hag would have indicated that ‘the players were lucky to be able to travel back to Manchester on the team bus and not together with the supporters, who had paid a lot of money to see such a terrible game’.

The manager is also said to have warned his players that if such a historic defeat were to happen again, they would be returned to Manchester United Under 21. Ten Hag has also urged his selection to make more use of Dutch sports psychologist Rainier Koers. “The manager doesn’t want his players to fall back into the negative spirit that was around the club last season. That is why he wants them to work more with the sports psychologist present,” a source within the club told the British newspaper.

The game with Liverpool ended on Sunday afternoon in an unprecedented wash for United. Cody Gakpo took care of the opening goal just before half-time, after which the Reds completely humiliated Ten Hag’s team in the second company. Darwin Núñez and Gakpo made it 3-0 within five minutes, after which a double from Mohamed Salah, a header from Núñez and a goal from Roberto Firmino, who left in the summer, determined the final score: 7-0. Jürgen Klopp’s team came three points away from number four Tottenham Hotspur, who have played one game more, due to the victory.
