It remains to be seen whether Kyle Walker will be part of England’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar in November. The right-back of Manchester City was injured during the city derby against Manchester United (6-3 win) last Sunday with a stomach injury. Walker has now undergone surgery, but it remains to be seen when the lightning-quick defender will be fit.

City manager Josep Guardiola indicated during the press conference after the victory over FC Copenhagen (5-0) that Walker will be out for weeks. However, he could not give an exact time, requested by the curious English journalists. “I don’t know. I really can’t say more than this. Kyle has been out for a while now, but I hope he will make it to the World Cup. I wish the same for Kalvin (Phillips, ed.), because I know how important a tournament like this is for a player.” Phillips is currently battling a shoulder injury.

Walker was operated on last Tuesday and via Twitter the right leg announced that everything went well. “As players we have to accept that injuries are part of the game we love. I am now focusing on my recovery and hope to be fully fit again soon.” In any case, Walker will miss the top match between Liverpool and City at Anfield. On October 16, the English superpowers will face each other in the Premier League.

For national team coach Gareth Southgate, who is currently under fire in England for the poor performance of the Three Lions, the absence of Walker would be an absolute loss. The City defender is almost always a starting player for England, as one of the three central defenders. Walker has been playing for the England national team since 2011, but was also out of action during the disappointing 2014 World Cup due to an injury. In 2018 Walker was a basic player in Russia.
