SC Cambuur has to do without Maxim Gullit for the rest of the season. The defender dropped out last weekend in the 2-1 won home game against Fortuna Sittard and suffered a serious knee injury, the Frisian club said. The son of Ruud Gullit has to go under the knife and is therefore not available for a longer period of time.

Gullit came in against Fortuna in the fourth minute of stoppage time, but was injured shortly afterwards. The left wing defender was unable to leave the field independently and was escorted from the field by stretcher with a golf cart. The 20-year-old defender was injured after an apparent collision with his own goalkeeper Sonny Stevens, when they both reacted to a header from Fortuna substitute Paul Gladon.

“Further investigation has shown that Maxim Gullit suffered a serious knee injury in the 2-1 won game against Fortuna Sittard. The twenty-year-old defender will have to undergo surgery and will therefore be out for a longer period of time,” Cambuur said on Tuesday. Trainer Henk de Jong feared the worst on Saturday. “Probably the knee band off,” he said at ESPN† “Very annoying. That boy is training well, he is really coming and then this happens to him. I really hate that.”

This season Gullit made seven games in the Eredivisie, all as a substitute. He came over from AZ in the summer, where he played for the U23 team. Gullit was not the only Cambuur player to be injured on Saturday. Doke Schmidt, the hero of the evening with a spectacular save on the goal line, broke his nose in the final phase.
