Quincy Promes is still stuck in the United Arab Emirates, as John van den Heuvel reports in a video item from The Telegraph. The crime reporter finds it very striking that the Spartak Moscow attacker is still detained in Dubai, while the Netherlands has already requested extradition. According to Van den Heuvel, Promes should have been extradited a long time ago, but he suspects that Russia wants to put a stop to that.

Promes is still in custody in the oil state after he was arrested in Dubai at the end of February. The attacker is said to have been involved in a traffic accident and then fled the scene.

The attacker was at a training camp in the Middle East with his employer Spartak Moscow, but was arrested at the airport from which he was supposed to fly back to Russia.

Since August 1, 2023, the Netherlands has had an extradition treaty with the Middle Eastern country and due to the recent convictions of a total of 7.5 years in prison, the Netherlands requested extradition from the UAE.

According to Van den Heuvel, the Netherlands should now be concerned, because Promes could have been extradited a long time ago. According to the crime journalist, it is 'completely unclear' why the UAE has still not extradited, despite the treaty.

“I know that the justice authorities in the Netherlands are indeed working behind the scenes to have him extradited. This happens in absolute silence, because the last thing anyone wants is to insult Dubai. But there are major concerns. It all goes very slowly and lethargically.”

Van den Heuvel then indicates that he suspects Russian interference. “It has become a peeing contest. If Dubai sends Promes to Russia, Moscow will boast of 'bringing in' Promes. If the Netherlands succeeds in getting him extradited, that will be a boost for the Netherlands,” said Van den Heuvel.
