FC Porto managed to get a point out of the fire against Arouca on Sunday evening during a crazy competition match that was full of remarkable twists and turns. Os Dragoes seemed to be heading for a point loss, but still made it 1-1 in the nineteenth minute of injury time. Partly due to a defective VAR screen, the arbitration decided to add an enormous amount of time after the ninety minutes had elapsed.

Mehdi Taremi thought Porto would take the lead after fifteen minutes, but referee Bertolo Nogueira, on the advice of the VAR, ruled out the goal due to offside. Cristo González then thought to give the visitors the full spoils in the 83rd minute by scoring the 0-1. The VAR looked back at the goal because of an alleged handball from González. Arouca was finally able to cheer to the great joy of the away supporters.

A few minutes later, the home team screamed bloody murder after several Porto players went to the ground at a free kick in Arouca’s sixteen-meter area. This time too, the VAR decided not to intervene. He had to do that in the 89th minute when referee Nogueira pointed after the penalty spot after a fake dive from Taremi. The Porto striker went to the ground far too voluntarily, after which the VAR called Nogueira to the sidelines to review the moment. Because the VAR screen did not work, the players of both teams and the fans remained in suspense for minutes. A telephone conversation led to Nogueira eventually going back on his decision and not giving a penalty.

The game was already in the 96th minute and five minutes later Porto still had the perfect chance to equalize after Taremi was illegally pulled to the ground by Nino Galovic this time. Galeno thought he could outwit Arouca goalkeeper Ignacio de Arruabarrena with a well-shot penalty kick, but had to watch how the closing post made a good save. In the nineteenth minute of injury time, Porto’s equalizer was still a fact. Evanilson became the celebrated man by running into a cross from Gonçalo Borges: 1-1.
