Valentijn Driessen sets the bar high for Louis van Gaal. The head of football the Telegraph writes in his column that it is time for the national coach of the Dutch to ‘deliver’, as Van Gaal himself also expects from his players. Driessen says that the choice lord must live up to his self-image of ‘best Dutch trainer ever’ at this World Cup.

Driessen sees in the run-up to the World Cup that Van Gaal demands all the attention. “A better than Van Gaal – after the fiasco with Frank de Boer at the European Championship – was not conceivable”, can be read in the journalist’s column. “Without any form of modesty, Van Gaal himself was firmly convinced of this. As Van Gaal considers himself the best Dutch football coach ever. For form, he always places himself in that list of best coaches behind his example and predecessor Rinus Michels; in the heart of the 71-year-old Amsterdammer, he sits on top of the monkey rock as a coach.”

That’s what the head of football thinks the Telegraph not right. According to him, Van Gaal only comes in fifth and he must give priority to Rinus Michels, Ernst Happel, Jan Zwartkruis and Bert van Marwijk. “That is why national coach Van Gaal still has everything to gain in Qatar to pass some more successful former colleagues at the Dutch. Despite the great Van Gaal show in the past sixteen months; to stay in Van Gaal’s own vocabulary: it is high time for him to deliver. It’s his last serious chance.”

Driessen expects Van Gaal and the Dutch to have a serious chance of winning a medal. “The necessary luck is on Van Gaal’s side. Linked to mediocre countries in the first and second rounds. While the injury specter only keeps top scorer and assist king Memphis Depay out of the base against Senegal, but the Netherlands is not on its heels. All signals are green for the the Dutch’s fourth World Cup final, if Van Gaal is as good a national coach as he pretends to be.”
