Borussia Dortmund has suffered a painful loss of points in the Bundesliga. The Schwarzgelben did not get further than 2-2 in the derby against Schalke 04. Dortmund was the better side for a long time and took the lead twice through Nico Schlotterbeck and Raphaël Guerreiro, but Schalke showed resilience and dragged a point out of the fire thanks to hits from Marius Bülter and Kenan Karaman. Due to the draw, Dortmund suffers its first loss of points in the Bundesliga since November 11 last year and is now two points behind leader Bayern. Number seventeen Schalke takes an important point in the fight against relegation.

On the Schalke side, both Thomas Ouwejan and Sepp van den Berg were absent due to injuries. The Dutch are two of the nine (!) players who are in the infirmary. Former tourist information officer Maya Yoshida did participate. He was in the heart of the defense next to Moritz Jenz. At Dortmund, Donyell Malen started for the first time since January 19, when he contributed to the 4-1 win over Hertha BSC with a goal. Just like Jude Bellingham, the Dutchman was behind striker Sébastien Haller. On the right, Marius Wolf was to provide the supply forward, while Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was to cover the left. Trainer Edin Terzic had to do without Marco Reus, Karim Adeyemi, Youssoufa Moukoko and Julian Brandt, among others.

After a dominant opening phase from Dortmund, the biggest chance of the game was for Schalke. Rodrigo Zalazar Martínez took advantage of a clumsy pass from Schlotterbeck to Mats Hummels, after which the attacker had a clear path and shot over. On the other side, Bellingham served Malen, who bounced off the turn on Fährmann’s legs. After Wolf also found the goalie of Schalke in his path, it was a hit a little later. Guerreiro gave in to Schlotterbeck, who had come along, who put the ball in front of his left and hit the target with a treacherous long shot: 0-1. A few minutes later, Bellingham tried to double the score, but the Englishman ran into Fährmann in the short corner. Malen was then also close to 0-2, but he saw a defender save with an extreme sliding.

Dortmund was also the better party at the start of the second half, but Bellingham’s loss of possession had major consequences. Michael Frey was reached from a counter on the left and the Swiss then passed at the far post, where Bülter had the ball for the tap: 1-1. However, Schalke could only enjoy the lead for ten minutes. Emre Can served Guerreiro, who had come up with him, who found the intersection with a nice shot: 1-2. The spaces widened for Dortmund and after a splitting pass from Wolf Bynoe-Gittens had a good opportunity, but the latter shot wide. Dortmund was given space and opportunities, but it was precisely Schalke that managed to find the goal. A sharp cross from Bülter ended up on the head of substitute Karaman, who left Alexander Meyer without a chance with a placed header: 2-2. The goalkeeper had a crucial save in the final phase on a shot from Éder Balanta.
