Danilho Doekhi has been nominated for the January Player of the Month award in the Bundesliga. The Union Berlin centre-back had an excellent month, in which he found the net three times in three games. With his two goals against TSG Hoffenheim (3-1) and one in the city derby at Hertha Berlin (0-2), he made a major contribution to those victories.

After Sheraldo Becker, Doekhi can become the second Dutchman to win the prize this season. The latter, who plays his international matches for Suriname, won the prestigious prize in August 2022. Doekhi’s attacker and teammate at Union scored four goals and two assists in four games that month. Just like Becker, Doekhi is also an undisputed basic player under trainer Urs Fischer. Union is in second place after nineteen rounds, just one point behind leader Bayern Munich.

In addition to Doekhi, Julian Brandt, Nico Schlotterbeck (both Borussia Dortmund), Niclas Füllkrug (Werder Bremen), André Silva (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Christopher Trimmel (Union Berlin) also have a chance to win the prize. Füllkrug also won the award in September and October, earning him a place in the German national team at the World Cup in Qatar. In November Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) was the winner.

The 24-year-old Doekhi made the transfer-free transfer from Vitesse to the German capital last summer. He has made 16 appearances so far those Eisen. Later this month, Union will play against Ajax in the intermediate round of the Europa League. Before the first leg takes place in the Johan Cruijff ArenA, Union will take on RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. The latter team is fourth in the Bundesliga, three points behind Union.
