Senegal is quarter-finalist at the Africa Cup. On Tuesday, Cape Verde (2-0) was settled in the eighth final, which ended with nine players due to two red cards. Before the game, both countries reflected on the tragic event surrounding Monday’s game between Cameroon and the Comoros. Eight people were killed and 50 injured in a stadium storm.

Already after twenty minutes of play, the flames went up in the match between Senegal and Cape Verde. Patrick Andrade had to leave with a direct red card after a hard charge on Pape Gueye. After almost an hour of play, Cape Verde, with starting places for Rotterdam-born Jeffry Fortes, Garry Rodrigues and Jamiro Monteiro, had to go even further with just nine players. Goalkeeper Vózinha had to push in after a hard collision with Sadio Mané. The closing post looked shattered during his retreat.

Afterwards, Senegal took the game to itself. Mane got hold of the ball after more than an hour from a corner and the star Liverpool player made a good hit with a watched ball in the top right corner, through the bottom of the bar. There was a moment of doubt whether the ball had crossed the goal line, also because the ball was quickly shot away by a player from Cape Verde. However, the VAR ruled that Senegal’s goal was valid, which was also clearly visible in the images. Remarkably enough, the director did not portray Mané’s hit, but the masterpiece was clearly visible in the reruns. The maker of the opening goal was not unscathed from the clash with Vózinha and was therefore taken to the side in the final phase as a precaution.

In the third minute of injury time, the accurate substitute Bamba Dieng put an end to all the tension: 2-0. Senegal can now prepare for a duel in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup. On Sunday, the team of national coach Aliou Cissé, one of the favorites for the overall victory at the tournament, will meet the winner of Wednesday evening’s meeting between Mali and Guinea.
