FC Utrecht has qualified for the second round of the KNVB Cup without too much effort. The team of trainer Henk Fräser won 0-3 against Sportlust’46. At sports park Cromwijck, Sander van de Streek was the big man by taking two hits. Sean Klaiber scored the third goal in injury time. A setback for the Domstedelingen was the early retirement of Django Warmerdam.

Despite the absences Bas Dost and Jens Toornstra, Fräser started with a strong line-up. There were six players in the starting line-up who were also on the field during the 6-1 defeat at PSV. Warmerdam replaced Djevencio van der Kust, while Klaiber started on the bench in favor of Hidde ter Avest. Naoki Maeda was preferred over Moussa Sylla. In midfield, Toornstra was replaced by Luuk Brouwers and Douvikas was in the lead of the attack.

Django Warmerdam suffered an injury after twelve minutes and in the ensuing attack Joshua Patrick was close to the opening goal. The striker’s shot was saved by Vasilios Barkas. Warmerdam was replaced moments later by Djevencio van der Kust. The left back was immediately important when he delivered a good cross to Van de Streek. The midfielder lost defender Floris Mulder in the mix, after which Van de Streek had the ball for tapping in: 0-1. In the remainder of the first half, there was little action for either goal.

The inhabitants of Woerden fought for what they were worth, but Utrecht nevertheless held out fairly easily. For example, Ahmed Al Mahdi tried with a shot that could be blocked. In the 70th minute, the Domstedelingen doubled their lead. A corner from Taylor Booth could be headed in by Van de Streek, after goalkeeper Romero Antonioli dived under the ball: 0-2. Van de Streek was close to 0-3 in the final phase, but Antonioli was there in time this time. In stoppage time, the third goal came via Klaiber. The substitute simply tapped under the goalkeeper after good preparatory work by Othman Boussaid.
