Sparta Rotterdam still controls participation in the play-offs for European football. Despite a goalless draw at home against FC Utrecht, Henk Fraser’s team is still on track to qualify for the play-offs as number eight in the Eredivisie: 0-0.

The bar prevented an early opening goal for Sparta. Abdou Harroui set up an attack after ten minutes of play, got the ball back from Lennart Thy and his shot in the penalty area ended on the aluminum. The Fraser team controlled the match for a long time, but FC Utrecht showed itself in the last ten minutes before half-time. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye turned a bet from Eljero Elia, a header from Willem Janssen went just wide and an athletic attempt by Hidde ter Avest was also a prey for Okoye.

In the second half, Utrecht caused the most danger. Gyrano Kerk and Moussa Sylla put goalkeeper Okoye to work, Django Warmerdam saw a shot go over and Adrián Dalmau headed wide. Sparta was still close to 1-0 in extra time when a volley from Thy went over and so the game in Rotterdam-West ended scoreless but with the Lords of the Castle as moral winner: 0-0.

Due to suspensions, Sparta has to face sc Heerenveen without Tom Beugelsdijk and Adil Auassar. The Fraser team has as many points as number nine Heracles Almelo, which drew against Feyenoord on Thursday (1-1) and visits AZ, but a better goal difference: 0 versus -6.
