Derby County has been penalized again for financial problems, the club confirmed on Tuesday via official channels. In September, the club was already deducted twelve points and on Tuesday another nine points were added. In total, that comes down to 21 points, which threatens to be relegated from the Championship.

Derby County has been struggling with financial difficulties for some time now. Due to the negative figures, the club was already penalized by the EFL (English Football League) earlier this season. The Rams appealed the 12 deductions, but announced that it had been withdrawn. Derby County says on the club’s website that a penalty of three points extra deducted is lurking. This penalty will be implemented from the EFL if the club does not meet the financial conditions set for the remainder of this season.

It has turned out to be a hopeless situation for manager Wayne Rooney and his team. Despite three wins and nine draws, Derby County is in 24th and last place in the ranking with a point total of minus three. The gap with number 23 Barnsley has risen to no less than fourteen points due to the new penalty. The safe 21st place, now taken by Peterborough United, is even further away: eighteen points. Without all points deducted, the club would have been 20th.

Derby County is looking for a new owner after owner Mel Morris announced in October last year that he wanted to sell the club. The financial problems also meant that Rooney has to make do with a narrow roster this season. Rooney’s team does not have much time to mourn, because next Saturday the very tough away game against Bournemouth, leader of the Championship.
