Ryan Koolwijk and Almere City FC have decided in good consultation to terminate the current contract with immediate effect. After an interim evaluation meeting with the technical staff and the perspective for the midfielder outlined therein, he expressed his wish to continue his career elsewhere. “The club management has decided, partly because of its excellent track record, to grant the request,” emphasizes the club from the Kitchen Champion Division.

The departure of Koolwijk, age 36, is a shock among the Almere City supporters, who express their surprise on social media. Koolwijk came over from AS Trencin last season and was the undisputed captain of the team that participated until the last match day for direct promotion to the Eredivisie. The veteran played a total of forty games for Almere City FC and was responsible for ten assists and one goal.

This season Koolwijk lost his captaincy under Verbeek to Tim Receveur, because he had to miss almost the entire preparation because of his participation in the Gold Cup with Suriname. Despite this, Koolwijk was in the starting line-up in the first four league games, although he was substituted in the second half in three of these games. The ambitious Almere City has started the season with four points from as many matches as very disappointing.

After the conscious evaluation interview with Gertjan Verbeek, Koolwijk expressed the wish to continue his career elsewhere, because he saw too little prospect for him in Almere. It is unclear which club he will join. Due to his transfer-free status, he can also sign a contract with a club after the transfer window.
