Memphis Depay is on its way to Barcelona. According to The Telegraph he agreed to a contract until mid-2024 at the Camp Nou and will provide Olympique Lyon with a maximum of 32 million euros. For the time being, the transfer will be blocked by the Spanish Football Federation, because Barcelona will have to sell players first. Should the transfer actually take place, Ronald de Boer expects that the national team can be successful with the Catalans.

The contract of Depay at Lyon expires in the summer of next year. The assailant does not want a new commitment and hopes for a top transfer. In all likelihood, he will get one with a transfer to Catalonia. “You don’t have to think long about that”, reacts former international Ronald de Boer at FOX Sports. “Barcelona is the highest achievable, along with perhaps Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. There’s no need to doubt that, because that’s what you’ve always dreamed of.”

The presence of Ronald Koeman as trainer at Barcelona is very important for Depay, De Boer thinks. “I have to say that under Koeman he played very well with the Dutch national team and that he had that click. That combination makes it interesting”, says the former striker, who played with Barça between 1999 and 2001. “That gives the feeling that he can hit him and accompany him so he does what he has to do. He already did that with the Dutch national team. Will it eventually work out? You never know.”

It’s not the first top transfer for Depay. The attacker made the switch from PSV to Manchester United earlier, but that wasn’t a great success. De Boer thinks the 26-year-old international can now succeed. “When he went to Manchester United he was still a great talent. At that time he was still young and inexperienced. Now we have a Memphis Depay that is pocked and mauled. He’s had a lot of experience over the last few years, so I think we’re seeing another Depay at a bigger top club.”

“And what I think is good for him is that he has to prove himself again.” “He has to win the dressing room and the audience. All those things ensure that he is well motivated and that he has the focus. Because that’s what you saw the other day with the Dutch national team. He was like that: I’ll do that. No, you don’t. If he’s well focused and has a coach who guides him so he does the things he’s very good at, then I think he can be successful.”
