Danilo’s season is over. The club top scorer of FC Twente has been suspended by the prosecutor for professional football for three matches, two of which are conditional, Twente reports on official channels on Friday afternoon. The attacker and the club have agreed to the settlement proposal. Danilo got a direct red card on Sunday in the lost league match against RKC Waalwijk (2-1), in which he also scored.

Danilo received his red card three minutes before time. The striker reacted frustrated after a duel with Paul Quasten. He followed the left back of RKC and was immediately sent off by referee Martin van den Kerkhof. Earlier in the match, in minute 47, Danilo opened the score after a lightning fast combination with Queensy Menig. RKC then turned the game over with two goals from Sylla Sow, both on instructions from Thijs Oosting.

Danilo participated in all 33 league games of Twente this season. He came in twice as a substitute. The 22-year-old Brazilian scored 17 times and is therefore on a level with Steven Berghuis of Feyenoord; only Donyell Malen from PSV (19) and Giorgos Giakoumakis from VVV-Venlo (26) scored more often. Danilo will miss the final competition match with ADO Den Haag and the first game of next season, if he stays in the Eredivisie.

Danilo already went through the dust via Instagram on Sunday. “Today was not how I wanted to end my season at FC Twente”, he wrote. “Although I believe my sentence was not fair, I would like to apologize to the club and the fans. It was a disappointing day and these things are happening in the heat of the moment.” Ron Jans, however, thought the red card was severely punished. “He was very quick to flap the red card,” said Ron Jans about arbitrator Van den Kerkhof.

Danilo’s violation can be seen from minute 10:40.
