The definitive signing of Cyriel Dessers seems to be a utopia for Feyenoord. The Belgian mercenary from Racing Genk grew into the goldcrest for the umpteenth time against PEC Zwolle on Sunday, by shooting in the liberating 1-2 in the final phase. It General Newspaper writes the day after the victory that the asking price of, however, is too much for the people of Rotterdam; an opinion that also trainer Arne Slot shares.

‘Dessers continues to deliver’ is the headline in the General Newspaper, after the striker’s first goal as a basic player in the Eredivisie. Dessers can be definitively transferred to De Kuip next summer for just over four million, but technical director Frank Arnesen previously indicated that amounts in that range will be a difficult story for Feyenoord. “Certainly not for someone who is a couch potato,” Arnesen added.

The arrival of Dessers seems possible if Feyenoord gives in to the proposal of some major investors, to which the club does not want to give in. The investors are prepared to provide Feyenoord with a capital injection, provided that the supervisory board is overhauled, other board members join major shareholder Stico and everything is done to become the owner of De Kuip. Slot therefore does not seem to have much faith in attracting Dessers: “But who knows, sometimes it can be done in a detour”, says the trainer with a joke after the game in Zwolle.

Finally, Dessers, who also scored in the midweek game against Partizan Belgrade (2-5), did not come across well against PEC. Willem van Hanegem shares that opinion. “Everyone is calling for Dessers, but what he showed was also very mediocre,” the columnist writes the day after the game. ‘Supersub’ Dessers has scored 12 goals from 34 matches for Feyenoord in all competitions this season, of which no less than 23 (!) as a substitute.
