Crystal Palace has fired Patrick Vieira, the club announced on Friday through the official channels. The Frenchman is held responsible for the disappointing results of recent months. Palace, which is twelfth in the Premier League, has not yet won a game in the 2023 calendar year. Reason enough for the management of the London club to sack Vieira.

Vieira was appointed manager of Palace in the summer of 2021 after tenures at New York City and OGC Nice failed to meet with great success. Led by the 46-year-old Frenchman the Eagles twelfth last season. This season, Palace got off to a rough start, winning only once in their first seven games. It led to Vieira coming under pressure. This calendar year, the team still came to draws against Manchester United, Newcastle United and Liverpool, but a dismissal could not be averted.

Vieira was unable to book a single victory with his team in 2023 (seven defeats, five draws). In addition, the team collected the fewest points of all clubs in the Premier League (five) and Palace is the least productive team of the year with four hits so far. “We are sorry to have to make this decision,” chairman Steve Parish said on the club’s website. “Ultimately, the results of the last few months have put us in this situation and we feel that a change is needed to remain active in the Premier League.”

Despite this, Parish notes that Vieira has had a ‘significant impact’ since his arrival in 2021. “Me and my colleagues hold him in very high esteem,” the chairman continues. “He led the team to the semi-finals of the FA Cup and a respectable twelfth place. Patrick has given everything for the club and we thank him and his team for their service.” The other members of the technical staff, Osian Roberts, Kristian Wilson and Saïd Aïgoun, have also received their congé. Goalkeeper coach Dean Kily can stay on.
