Kees Kwakman points out that Danilho Doekhi and Riechedly Bazoer have become clichés after Vitesse’s 0-5 defeat against PSV. The team from Arnhem suffered their fourth defeat in a row on Saturday evening and conceded no fewer than sixteen goals during this series. Doekhi and Bazoer state that Vitesse ‘is in the corner where the blows fall’ and that ‘the heads must be put together’.

Doekhi gets in front of the camera from . immediately afterwards ESPN the question of what is going on with Vitesse. “We are in the corner where the blows fall. Yes, dramatic. It looked nothing like today. It doesn’t help if you’re in bad shape and then conceded a goal so quickly. PSV played it easy and created opportunities,” is the answer from the Vitesse captain. Presenter Milan van Dongen wonders where the Vitesse has gone that made it difficult for Stade Rennes and Tottenham Hotspur.

“I hope it comes back soon, because this is nothing. How do we do that? Put your heads together and give it full throttle. Just talk about it with each other, say what needs to be improved and show that in the next game”, reacts Doekhi. A little later, teammate Bazoer also appears in front of the camera of ESPN† “I think it was ten times nothing”, he analyzes the duel with PSV. “We are in the corner where the blows fall. Four games, sixteen goals against, zero goals scored: you’re ashamed of that.”

“We played well last season and reached the cup final,” Bazoer continues. “We have also made it to the next round of the Conference League this season and entered the winter break as number four, but we got off to a bad start in 2022. We knew this was going to be a difficult month with top matches, but we are failing.”

Bazoer is confronted by Van Dongen with the ‘football cliché’ that Doekhi uttered in response to the question of how Vitesse should get out of this form slump. Van Dongen wants to know from Bazoer whether he can add something that is not a cliché. “What we have to do now is stay together”, Bazoer responds, who has a short laugh after the answer. “It is, actually. Don’t lose heart, train hard and try to turn this around as quickly as possible.”

“Do you know how eager those players would like to say: ‘Maybe it’s an idea if we start training on something’. Do you know how many times I wanted to say that?” Kwakman says after seeing the interview with Bazoer in the studio of ESPN† “That is also due to the level at which you play. If you play at a top club, you also get top trainers. Sometimes it is that simple.”

Mario Been asks whether Kwakman means that Vitesse does not train on anything. “When I see this… It’s not the first time I see this. I don’t know, I can’t imagine. But in general, players always fall into the same clichés, of: ‘We have to keep working hard’”, responds Kwakman. Arnold Bruggink mentions that a lot of players may not be able to speak out. Kwakman: “Maybe Bazoer is. But not Doekhi, indeed.”
