Chris Smalling was the victim of an armed robbery on Thursday night, writes La Gazzetta dello Sport. According to the sports newspaper, three armed men gave themselves access to Smalling’s home in Rome. He was then forced to open a safe and hand over valuable belongings.

Smalling lives with his wife Sam Cooke and their two-year-old son Leo. The center defender of AS Roma was not available for the Europa League match against Ajax (1-1) on Thursday due to knee complaints and therefore watched the match from home. Later in the night, when Smalling and his girlfriend were already asleep, the armed and masked men broke into the Englishman’s apartment.

They forced Smalling to open a safe and looted a Rolex, various jewels and “other valuables,” he said La Gazzetta dello Sport. Smalling’s wife called the police around 5 a.m. Authorities have started an investigation into the burglary and Roma have indicated their willingness to assist Smalling in every possible way.

The club was already startled in November 2020 by a burglary in the villa of trainer Paulo Fonseca in Monteverde. Assets worth about a ton were then stolen, but Fonseca herself was not at home at the time. Five months earlier, in June, Bryan Cristante was approached in his car by two men who were trying to rob him of his watch. The midfielder got out of his car and managed to chase the criminals away, after which he called for help. A police officer who was in the area outside working hours came to the scene and helped Cristante with the further handling.
