Olympique Marseille recently rented Kevin Strootman at Cagliari. Despite this, the midfielder’s salary is still largely paid by the French, Serie A club president Tommaso Giulini revealed. Cagliari even has the option to hire Strootman for a second season. His contract with Marseille will run until the summer of 2023.

“We have to be creative in the transfer market and when the opportunity arose to get Strootman, we grabbed it with both hands,” Giulini said in an interview with Corriere dello Sport. “That was actually quite unbelievable. We signed a rental deal for two seasons and Marseille takes 70% of his salary. Kevin is super motivated and would love to finish his career with us,” says the Cagliari president about the now 31 year old midfielder.

In January, Cagliari reportedly also entered the race for the signature of Strootman, who at the time preferred Genoa. He became a regular at la Superba and made eighteen appearances in the second half of the season, in which he did not score but provided four assists. Cagliari is the third Italian club for the midfielder, who previously played 131 matches in the AS Roma shirt between 2013 and 2018.

Giulini also hopes that Radja Nainggolan can be definitively taken over from Internazionale. “The negotiations are still in full swing. It would have been nice if Radja had been there from the start of the preparation, but we continue to hope for his return. According to Italian journalist Nicolò Schira, Caglari offers a two-year contract with an annual salary. of 1.5 million euros, while Nainggolan himself is looking for a three-year contract with an annual salary of two million euros.
