Gianluigi Buffon has finally hung up his goalkeeper gloves, the 45-year-old goalkeeper himself reports on Twitter. A departure from the Italian closing post had been in the air for some time, as journalist Gianluca Di Marco of the Italian branch of Sky Sports and the Spanish Relev announced on Sunday that Buffon had already played his last game in professional football.

Buffon confirmed the farewell on Wednesday afternoon. “This was it. You have given me everything and I have given you everything. We did this together,” the experienced closing post wrote on Twitter. His last employer Parma also makes himself heard on the social medium: “Thanks for everything. Gigi is forever!”

Towards the end of 1995, Buffon made his debut for Parma in Serie A. In a home game against AC Milan, the goalkeeper immediately managed to keep his goal clean. The goalkeeper would eventually be active for the club for seven seasons, before making a transfer to Juventus for an amount of more than fifty million euros. This made Buffon the most expensive goalkeeper ever. He lost this title to Alisson in 2018 and Kepa Arrizabalaga is now regarded as the goalkeeper with the biggest price tag.

After a period of seventeen years at La Vecchia Signora Buffon made a trip to France, where he played for Paris Saint-Germain for two seasons. Two years later he was already back at Juventus, to come full circle again two seasons later with a return to childhood sweetheart Parma. Buffon played 176 caps for Italy, making him a record international. With his country, the goalkeeper won the world title in 2006.
