Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany expresses doubts about the massive criticism his ex-club has received. City is accused of breaking Financial Fair Play rules on more than 100 counts. The Belgian questions the motives of other Premier League clubs that the Citizens would prefer to be excluded from the competition.

Last Monday it was announced that Manchester City is guilty of more than a hundred violations in the field of Financial Fair Play, according to the Premier League. It would then be the period between 2009 and 2018. In that time span, the English superpower is accused of evading Financial Fair Play, ‘blowing up’ sponsorship deals, lacking data on these deals and paying improper amounts to both players as trainers. All this was revealed in a publication of The Times. According to the newspaper, the club must fear points deduction or even mandatory relegation.

In conversation with Sky Sports Kompany says he is not too concerned about the allegations and questioned the motives of the critics. “I look at it and then roll my eyes,” says Burnley’s trainer. “The world is always there like the chickens to tell you what you’ve done wrong. It would be better if clubs take a good look at themselves. I don’t think the entire football industry can afford to point the finger too much.”

The clubs that have pushed hardest for a heavy penalty for City are among the so-called ‘Big Six’including Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Sky Sports to report. Kompany finds it ironic that it is precisely these clubs that demand strict measures. “I think we all have to laugh a little bit about this because we know exactly what the football industry is all about. So I am very skeptical when people start pointing the finger,” he refers to the millions-throwing Premier League top clubs.
