PSV encountered a major setback in the run-up to Sunday’s top match against Ajax. Roger Schmidt probably cannot have Maximiliano Romero, report Football International and the Eindhovens Dagblad. The 23-year-old striker has suffered another injury. Although the final diagnosis has yet to be announced, it is feared that Romero will again have to watch for a while.

The reports of a new injury at Romero are confirmed by sources around the Argentine. Reports that he would be ‘out’ for five weeks are not yet confirmed, it writes Eindhovens Dagblad. It is not yet known how serious the injury is, but it is feared that he will not make it to Ajax on Sunday. It was not expected that Romero would appear at the kick-off against Ajax, as Eran Zahavi will probably make his competition return in the point of the attack.

The injury is a major blow to Romero’s bill. The attacker was on the right track and was still in the base with the Eindhoven team last week in the league match against FC Groningen. He also participated for half an hour against Telstar for the TOTO KNVB Cup on Thursday evening. In total, he played in seven Eredivisie games this season, including one as a basic player. He still couldn’t score. Romero returned this season after being sidelined for a year with a serious knee injury.

The striker was taken over by PSV in 2018 for ten million euros from Vélez Sarsfield, but since then he has struggled with various injuries. Romero was sidelined the longest last season, after a torn cruciate ligament. For the time being, in more than three years – apart from a season that he spent on a rental basis with Vélez Sarsfield – he only played 110 minutes in the Eredivisie in the PSV main squad, spread over 9 matches. The former youth international of Argentina still has a contract in Eindhoven until mid-2023.
