Benjamin Mendy thought he would get certain privileges in prison. Manchester City left-back, accused of rape and sexual assault, went there, according to The Sun assuming he would end up in a VIP area, especially for celebrities and big names from the sports world. Mendy, however, received a major shock when he was assigned to a VP wing, especially for ‘vulnerable prisoners’ and people suspected of sexually inadmissible behaviour.

In this way, the prison in Cheshire, England, keeps Mendy at a distance from the other inmates. Mendy thought he had heard from the prison guards that he would receive preferential treatment, but that turned out to be a misconception. “Mendy was told on arrival at the prison that he would be on the VP wing. But Mendy is French and his English may not be very good. He didn’t understand exactly what was being said and thought he would be taken to a VIP area for celebrities,” a source said in a statement. The Sun.

“He was rudely awakened when he saw the cell and realized who he was dealing with. He wasn’t happy about that and it was a very sobering experience for him,” added the source. The Sun further reports that people suspected of rape and assault regularly have to deal with name-calling from other inmates.

Mendy, 27, is being sued by three victims over the age of 16. City has suspended the defender, the English superpower reported last Thursday through a statement on the website. A day later, it emerged that Mendy will not be released on bail in any case, which means that the left-back will have to stay in prison until at least September 10, the day he will appear in court again.

Only in an exceptional situation can Mendy be released from prison before September 10, so it sounded from England last week. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed on Thursday that there are four charges for rape and one for sexual assault between October 2020 and August 2021. In addition, he has violated the terms of any bail. Manchester City have announced that Mendy has been provisionally suspended pending the police investigation. The wing defender arrived at the court in a white police van on Friday morning, although he was not allowed to tell his story there yet.
