RB Leipzig will be the opponent of SC Freiburg in the final of the DFB Pokal on May 21 in the Olympiastadion in Berlin. The team of coach Domenico Tedesco qualified for the final battle on Wednesday evening by dealing with Union Berlin in the semi-final, thanks to a goal from Emil Forsberg in the second minute of injury time. RB Leipzig will play the third cup final in club history: in 2019 they lost to Bayern Munich, while Borussia Dortmund was too strong in the final battle in 2021.

The duel in the Red Bull Arena started without some of the accompanying fans from Berlin. Only when there was exactly fifteen minutes on the clock did the guest section fill up completely. The supporters who boycotted the start of the game only missed a fairly harmless shot from Dominik Szoboszlai. They were in just in time for Union’s opening goal, which fell with 25 minutes on the clock. With a tight cross, Christopher Trimmel found Becker at the far post, who struck in the far corner behind goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi.

RB Leipzig’s first big chance was delayed until ten minutes before half time. André Silva was the end station of a smoothly running attack after being served by Benjamin Henrichs, but pushed the ball just wide from close range. Even after the break, RB Leipzig was emphatically looking for the equalizer, which resulted in opportunities for Henrichs and Dani Olmo. On the other side, Becker broke out dangerously, but his attempt inside the penalty area was between a shot and a cross to Taiwo Awoniyi.

RB Leipzig was helped into the saddle after exactly an hour of play. After VAR interference, referee Felix Brych awarded a penalty for a foul by Paul Jaeckel on Nkunku. Silva made no mistake from eleven meters and shot the 1-1 against the ropes through the middle. It then seemed for a long time that there would be no winner in regular time, especially when Timo Baumgartl made a clever save on the goal line after a bet by Angeliño. In the ensuing attack in the second minute of stoppage time, however, RB Leipzig still scored the winning goal. Henrichs brought the ball back into the penalty area with a cross, where substitute Emil Forsberg those Roten Bullen headed to the final.
