Bayern Munich did what it had to do on Saturday afternoon in the battle for top position in the Bundesliga. Was visiting FC Augsburg der Rekordmeister 2-3 too strong, thanks to goals from Aleksandar Pavlovic, Alphonso Davies and Harry Kane. Ermedin Demirovic (twice) scored on behalf of the home team. The victory means the gap between leader Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich is only one point, although Leverkusen still has a game in hand. Augsburg is twelfth.

There was a defender in the base on both sides. At Bayern it was Matthijs de Ligt, on the Augsburg side Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. De Ligt formed the heart of the Bayern defense with Eric Dier, who is on loan from Tottenham Hotspur for the rest of the season and made his starting debut on Saturday.

Early in the match, Augsburg seemed to get a penalty after a handball by De Ligt. However, VAR determined that the ball had landed on the defender's arm outside the penalty area, meaning Augsburg had to make do with a free kick. That yielded nothing.

After about fifteen minutes it seemed to be 1-0 through Elvis Rexhbecaj, but again the party did not go ahead for the home team. This time it was offside, the VAR found.

On the other side of the field, it was scored in the 23rd minute: Pavlovic scored after a corner kick from close range. Just before half time, Bayern even doubled the score. Davies pushed the ball into the short corner from about twenty meters: 0-2.

Augsburg had to respond in the second half, and they succeeded. Demirovic headed in a cross from Kevin Mbabu: 1-2. Within a few minutes, however, the margin was again two. Kane was able to easily tap in the 1-3 from close range. First his goal was disallowed for offside, but after VAR interference again it turned out that it was simply a valid goal.

In the final phase, in which Mathys Tel hit the post, things suddenly became even more exciting. First, Augsburg was awarded a penalty after VAR interference due to a foul by Manuel Neuer on Felix Uduokhai. However, the goalkeeper made up for his mistake by stopping Sven Michel's penalty. When Augsburg received another penalty in injury time – this time after a foul by Thomas Müller – Neuer had no answer: 2-3. That would be it.
