Bayern Munich is surprisingly out of the Champions League. After last week’s 1-0 defeat in Spain, a 1-1 draw at home against Villarreal, which is not enough for the semi-finals. Robert Lewandowski was of course again accurate for the German superpower, but the European adventure ends in the quarterfinals due to a late goal by Samuel Chukwueze on behalf of the Spaniards. After Juventus, Villarreal also eliminates Bayern in the billion-dollar ball.

As expected, the home side started their second meeting with Villarreal in a week’s time fiercely and aggressively. In the first fifteen minutes that provided opportunities for Leon Goretzak and Joshua Kimmich. It was striking that Lewandowski hardly appeared in Bayern’s attacking game in the first phase. Jamal Musiala could and perhaps should have put his team at 1-0 after half an hour of play, but his header went straight to goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli. Musiala hit Raúl Albiol with his head and both players had to be repaired. Shortly afterwards, the same Albiol was the victim of a tackle by Lewandowski, who received the yellow card for it.

Four minutes before half-time, Bayern received a clear warning from Villarreal. Arnaut Danjuma went for the goal from the left, with two opponents beside him. An ideal opportunity arose for the attacker, who shot wildly and wide. In the replay it became clear that Danjuma started his action in an offside position. Gerard Moreno shot into the side net on behalf of the visitors, but no goals were scored in the first half. Two minutes after the break, Rulli Musiala stopped scoring with a good reflex. A few minutes later it was still hit for Bayern. Thomas Müller took advantage of sloppy ball loss and enabled Lewandowski to score on the edge of the box. His shot went through the post into the goal. Goal number thirteen of the Pool in the Champions League this season.

In minute 72, Müller failed to put Bayern on 2-0 with a header. Three minutes later, Kingsley Coman fired hard over Villarreal’s goal. With eight minutes left on the clock, the tired Musiala was replaced by Serge Gnabry. A minute later, Danjuma missed a good chance. Manuel Neuer saw the shot fly past his target. In minute 88, Bayern fans watched in amazement as Moreno managed to reach Chukwueze at the far post. The substitute didn’t hit the ball very well, but it was enough to outwit Neuer: 1-1. The broken Bayern was unable to drag an extension out of the fire in the four minutes of injury time. Unai Emery and his team had a big party after the new stunt in the Champions League.
