Ralf Rangnick is the leading candidate to become the new head coach of Bayern Munich, it is reported tz. Seemed like a long time der Rekordmeister to go for Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso or the German national coach Julian Nagelsmann, but the choice ultimately fell on the current national coach of Austria, Rangnick. An agreement could be reached within a week.

After a season and a half, Bayern says goodbye to Thomas Tuchel, who was unable to bring the dreamed successes to the Allianz Arena. Before that, the German superpower had already dismissed Nagelsmann after just over half a season.

Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, who are responsible for technical policy at Bayern, have said tz already talked to Rangnick. If the coach gives his consent, he will be in front of the Bayern playing group immediately after the European Championship.

Rangnick was last club coach at Manchester United, but ultimately left Old Trafford with his tail between his legs. Rangnick had initially agreed to continue as an advisor after his short spell as manager of the club, but after a disappointing sixth place in the Premier League, the decision was made to part ways permanently in mid-2022.

Rangnick has an extremely good reputation in Germany. The 65-year-old football professor was at the basis of the enormous rise of RB Leipzig, where he was active as both a director and a coach between 2012 and 2020. Leipzig quickly promoted from the fifth level to the Bundesliga. Before that, Rangnick had also made a major contribution to TSG Hoffenheim's breakthrough in German football between 2005 and 2011.

Rangnick is appointed national coach of Austria until mid-2026, but is therefore willing to talk to Bayern. If both parties cannot reach an agreement, the German top club will probably switch to Roberto De Zerbi, the success coach of Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Zerbi has the major disadvantage that a transfer fee of no less than fourteen million euros has to be paid for the coach. Moreover, the Italian wants to bring with him a huge technical staff. Rangnick is a much cheaper option and also carries a much smaller entourage.

Nagelsmann had been in the picture for a quick return to Bayern for a while, but not everyone within the club wanted that. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who is part of the Supervisory Board, in particular is said to be an opponent of Nagelsmann. Xabi Alonso, another candidate, meanwhile decided to stay an extra year at Leverkusen, the club he led undefeated to the first national title in club history.
