Barcelona will do everything it can to keep Frenkie de Jong, says chairman Joan Laporta in an interview with Cadena Cope† The 25-year-old midfielder is strongly linked with a transfer to Manchester United, but can stay in Catalonia for a lower salary.

“Frenkie de Jong is a Barça player, one of the best midfielders in the world. He is a player of extraordinary qualities,” Laporta praised. “There are several clubs that want him, not just Manchester United, but we have no intention of selling him and he wants to stay. However, there is a salary issue. Something has to change about that.”

A longer stay by Ousmane Dembélé is not yet ruled out by Laporta. The attacker is currently transfer-free, after months of contract negotiations finally failed to materialize. It is a financial matter and two parties have to agree. We are calm at the moment, we maintain a good relationship with the player and with his agents. If they accept the conditions we have proposed, Dembele can continue to play here.”

Laporta also confirms the transfer-free arrival of Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessié in the interview. That the duo would make a transfer to Barcelona was an open secret. Due to LaLiga’s financial regulations, Barca could not announce the arrival of the pair earlier. Kessié comes over free from AC Milan, while Christensen comes free from Chelsea.
