Latest update:

Merijn Zeeman will start working as the new general manager of AZ on December 1, the Alkmaar club confirms through official channels. Zeeman currently works as technical director of the cycling team Visma-Lease a Bike, formerly Jumbo-Visma. Zeeman will succeed Robert Eenhoorn in the AFAS Stadium.

Zeeman is happy with his upcoming position, he said on the AZ club website. “AZ has a strong foundation. The sporting, financial and organizational basis has been carefully built up over many years. From that strong position, I will try to contribute to helping AZ take the next steps.”

Zeeman has a considerable track record at the former Jumbo-Visma, with which he had an unprecedentedly successful sporting year last year. It is not without reason that the top man was nominated for the title Sports Coach of the Year, organized by the NOS and sports umbrella organization NOC*NSF.

Zeeman is looking forward to getting started in football. “After great years at Team Visma, I am looking forward to taking the next steps in the football world together with the AZ organization. AZ is known for its specific way of working, both on and off the field. This culture, vision and working method suits me well.”

The current general manager, Eenhoorn, will resign from the Alkmaarders on July 1. The reason for his departure was fatigue. “I noticed a certain metal fatigue setting in. A club like AZ deserves full commitment and that energy turned out to be increasingly difficult for me to find,” the manager explained the choice for his dismissal.

Eenhoorn was closely involved in identifying his successor. He has also been given the task of preparing the new director for the job. He may therefore take Zeeman under his wing in the coming months.

AZ would have to fill a director position in addition to the position of general manager, it wrote BNR earlier. They are targeting Robert van Overdijk, the current director of the Zandvoort Circuit, for this.

However, Van Overdijk would also be closely monitored by Ajax, but two other Dutch clubs also had the director on their list. “That Robert van Overdijk appears to be extremely hot. He was already the first candidate at Willem II and he was the most important candidate at FC Twente,” said the radio station.
