Mauricio Pochettino may face a return to the Premier League, reports The Telegraph. Aston Villa is ambitious and sees the Argentine coach as the absolute dream candidate should the club decide to sack Steven Gerrard in the coming weeks.

Aston Villa is currently in a disappointing 16th place in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone. Gerrard has only won two of his first ten league games and now faces a crucial week. Thursday steps the Villans in an away game against Fulham, after which Brentford comes to visit on Sunday. A win over the Bees seems necessary if Gerrard is to save his job as Villa manager.

If the roads between Gerrard and Villa actually part in the coming weeks, the English would like to The Telegraph ‘moving heaven and earth’ for Pochettino. When Gerrard is fired, Villa is after a manager with an excellent reputation. The currently clubless Thomas Tuchel and Villarreal coach Unai Emery would also be on the shortlist if Pochettino proves unfeasible.

The Argentine coach has been without a club since he was sacked by PSG this summer. Pochettino had been under fire at the elite club for some time and left Paris after a year and a half. He joined the PSG board at the beginning of July to evaluate the 2021/22 season, after which it was decided in good consultation to end the collaboration. Previously, he was active as a trainer at Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Espanyol.
