AS Roma suffered a direct loss of points in its first game of the season. The team of coach José Mourinho, who was suspended in the stands, played a 2-2 draw against Salernitana, just like last season. Andrea Belotti, who scored zero goals last season, made the first and last goal of the match. Antonio Candreva stole the show in between with two very nice goals. At the same time, Atalanta did win at Sassuolo. Charles De Ketelaere had a dream debut with a striking header, after which Nadir Zortea finished the job: 0-2.

AS Roma – Salernitana 2-2
Roma, with newcomers Rasmus Kristensen and Houssem Aouar in the starting line-up, started very nicely and thought they would take the lead in the tenth minute. Belotti took well with the right and rounded off with the left. However, the striker turned out to be offside. Moments later it was still hit for the routine. Again he rounded off nicely with the left and this time his goal counted: 1-0. Shortly after a shot from Gianluca Mancini flew over the crossbar, Salernitana leveled the score. The 36-year-old Candreva, a born Roman, cut in from the left and lashed out devastatingly in the short corner: 1-1.

After the break, Roma had to go to work, but it was Salernitana that took the lead. Candreva received a high ball on the right side of the box, played his man and took another devastating blow. This time he found the far corner behind Rui Patrício: 1-2. Roma, which incidentally took office without the suspended strongholds Paulo Dybala and Lorenzo Pellegrini, made four substitutions in the hope of bringing about a change. Renato Sanches made his debut and Rick Karsdorp and Leandro Paredes also came on the line. Ten minutes before the end, the latter hurled a corner kick in front of the goal, which Belotti made good use of with a header: 2-2. Roma didn’t get any further.

Sassuolo – Atalanta 0-2
Atalanta had a difficult first half in Reggio Emilia, but nevertheless created some good opportunities. For example, Duván Zapata saw his shot in the box narrowly blocked by Sassuolo defender Viti, while the Colombian Andrea Consigli forced a fine save moments later. Marten de Roon, who was lined up next to Teun Koopmeiners, saw that Consigli also had an answer to his volley.

After the break, Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini brought in debutants Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere, among others. The latter was close to his first for the club in minute 65. However, on a request from Scamacca, he hit the crossbar. Just before time it was still hit for the Belgian. Consigli saved his header, which had already crossed the goal line: 0-1. Nadir Zortea also made it 0-2 in injury time. His shot from about eighteen meters flew wonderfully into the far corner.
