Things certainly don’t want to go smoothly at AS Roma this season. Coach José Mourinho’s team lost 4-1 at Genoa on Thursday evening and therefore drops to sixteenth place in Serie A. Former Eredivisie players Albert Gudmundsson and Morten Thorsby were both worth gold for the PhD candidate with a goal, while former Roma player midfielder Kevin Strootman recorded an assist for the opening goal. Genoa climbs to eleventh place.
Particularities:
Genoa scored within five minutes. Roma wanted to build up, but suffered a clumsy loss of ball. Strootman gained possession of the ball and deftly passed it to Gudmundsson, who found the short corner with a low slider: 1-0. A good result was still possible for Roma, especially when Bryan Cristante headed the 1-1 against the ropes on a pass from Leonardo Spinazzola. However, just before half time, Genoa dealt a huge blow to Roma. Thorsby gave a nice pass to Mateo Retegui, who scored nicely: 2-1.
Roma had to work after the break, had chances through Romelu Lukaku and Cristante, among others, but were unable to score. Fifteen minutes before the end, Thorsby, who came on early for the injured Milan Badelj, made the decision. The former Heerenveen midfielder headed home from close range from a corner: 3-1. Club icon Francesco Totti watched from the stands as the suffering for his Roma only increased. Junior Messias was completely outlawed at the far post and did not miss his opportunity: 4-1.
