Aron Winter has announced his first selection as national coach of Suriname. The 55-year-old coach, who temporarily takes over from the resigned Stanley Menzo, has been left with a 25-man selection. The preselection of Nationality consisted of forty players, which meant that Winter had to disappoint quite a few players.

Winter reached an agreement with the Surinamese football association at the beginning of September about the temporary succession of Menzo and not much later started preparations for the upcoming practice matches. The next opponent is Nicaragua on September 22. That game will be played in the Almere City FC stadium. Winter gets help from assistant coaches Roberto Gödeken and Ryan Koolwijk. For the latter, the stadium of the Flevolanders is familiar territory.

There will not be much pressure on the upcoming practice matches, as Suriname did not qualify for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. Nationality was already eliminated in the first qualifying round of the CONCACAF zone, then led by Dean Gorré. Canada finished first in the group and eventually also seized a World Cup ticket. Gorré was fired not much later, after which Menzo took over. At the end of August it was announced that Menzo was leaving because of a ‘lucrative offer from abroad’.
