The day after FC Barcelona's Champions League elimination, things were a bit rough in the Catalan dressing room. Ronald Araújo did not seem very happy with the statements of his teammate Ilkay Gündogan.

There seemed to be no problem for FC Barcelona on Wednesday evening. After a flashy action by super talent Lamine Yamal and the somewhat fortunate finish by Raphinha, the Spaniards had excellent credentials to advance to the semi-finals of the billion dollar ball.

However, it was a pitch-black evening for Xavi's team, in which Araújo played a negative leading role. The Uruguayan defender brought down a broken Bradley Barcola and referee István Kovács punished the stopper with a red card.

While Xavi mainly complained about the referee afterwards, Gündogan took a critical look at his own team. “We were in such a good position after the opening goal,” the German midfielder said afterwards.

“We had it in our own hands. We just gave it away in the simplest way possible and that's the most disappointing thing.” When asked, Gündogan also had a few words to say about his teammate's red card.

“I haven't seen the replay, but if he committed a foul it was a red card. In crucial moments like this you have to be sure that you can play the ball, otherwise you have to stay away.”

The midfielder would therefore have preferred that Araújo had made a different choice so that he could have remained on the field. “I would of course have preferred that we conceded a goal there or that we had given the striker a 1-on-1 (with Marc-André Ter Stegen, ed.).”

“But give him (Barcola, ed.) the chance, or let the goalkeeper save us. Because to come up with ten men so early in the match killed us,” Gündogan refers to the elimination of his team.

Araújo response

The day after the bitter elimination, Araújo is confronted with his teammate's statements at a book presentation. He does not seem to have taken note of Gündogan's words with joy.

“I prefer to keep to myself what I think of his comments,” the mandecker responded. “I have my own norms and values that I think you should respect. Asked whether he thought Gündogan did not respect those norms and values, the defender bit his lip.

“I think I have already answered that question,” replied Araújo, who also briefly discussed his near future. “There is always talk,” he responded to the rumors that Bayern Munich are in the market for him. “I am very happy in Barcelona. My agents have started discussions about a contract extension.”
