Atlético Madrid has again drawn a scoreless draw in LaLiga. Three days after the 0-0 at PhD candidate Huesca, Diego Simeone’s team got no further than a 0-0 in-house against Villarreal. Atlético had started the league season gloriously six days ago by winning 6-1 against Granada, thanks in part to two goals from Luis Suárez, but the Uruguayan was unable to help his team score a goal or win for the second time in three days.

Atlético made a good impression in possession in the first half, but Villarreal looked very strong defensively and knew what to do with every attack by Simeone’s team. Joao Félix and Luis Suárez in particular lacked the speed to surprise the visitors. It was even thanks to Jan Oblak that Unai Emery’s team did not reach the halftime signal with a lead. After about eighteen minutes, the goalkeeper made an excellent save on a shot by Mario Gaspar towards the roof of the goal.

In the first fifteen minutes after the delay, the game went up and down. Oblak had to come into action again on a shot from Mario and after that Gerard Moreno and Manu Trigueros had their sights not sharp. In between, Suárez was unable to cash in on a pass from Renan Lodi at the far post and the Brazilian back then tested Sergio Asenjo with a shot. Simeone had seen enough twenty minutes before the end and took Suárez, Koke and Ángel Correa to the side, in favor of Diego Costa, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and Marcos Llorente.

In the remaining playing time, Atlético was clearly the team that ruled the game, while the fatigue in the legs of the players of Villarreal was visible. However, that did not lead to a goal in the final minutes. Villarreal is currently in the lead in LaLiga with eight points from five matches and will play the regional derby against Valencia after the international period. Atlético has five points from three meetings and is waiting for an away match against Celta de Vigo in two weeks.
